I'm a real show-stopper in any tropical style garden. I love being in a border alongside other plants, and I'm also happy in pots. My bright green fronds unfurl magically in early summer. I'll thrive in a typical British summer, and if the conditions are right I can add up to 5cm height each year. If you put me in a large pot I'll seem even bigger! I trace my ancestry to eastern Australia and Tasmania, where the climate is often very similar to the UK. I will enjoy any weather the summer and autumn throw at me, but once winter comes my fronds will die back, and you should stuff some straw into my crown to protect me from frost.

  • That depends where you keep me. If I'm in a pot in a cool shady exposed balcony I might grow a couple of centimetres taller each year. If I'm in a warm sunny border with loads of moisture and feed I might grow 5cm a year. Ultimately I can grow to be a medium sized tree so don't plant me too close to a wall or fence.
