I’m a large tropical houseplant, but I’m happy to spend my summers outside in a sheltered spot with dappled shade. I’m originally from tropical Mexican rain forests where I’m shielded from the scorching sun by larger canopy trees. My name comes from early botanists who thought my leaves looked monstrous and ugly, but when they tasted my delicious fruit (NOT MY LEAVES OR STEMS - THEY’RE TOXIC!) they had a conundrum. They resolved it by naming me “monstrously delicious” - although it does sound like an advertising slogan a fast food joint would roll out every Halloween!

My leaves must not be chewed because they contain tiny crystals of calcium oxalate which irritates the mouth causing pain, swelling and drooling.
